I am an artist from Scotland, and I was coloured pencil 'Artist of the Month' away back in April 2000.

One of my coloured pencil pieces was of 'The Wave' and just recently I painted it again this time using oils and a palette knife. I emailed Gemma, asking her if she would be interested in showing other artists my two styles of artwork off the same subject, and she kindly said yes, so here they are.

The Wave in Coloured Pencil

First of all I chose to do a drawing of a wave because of the different shades of colour that you can get from the sea and I wanted to capture this, also with the use of the colours you can create the feeling of movement and the power from the wave. So I decided with my first attempt to use coloured pencils, because there was so much detail in the wave and I knew I could achieve this with pencils, even although it would take alot of time. When I draw with pencils, I just start at one end and work across, I don't block in everything then work into it.

I remembered drawing the detail for a couple of hours with not much to show, and I thought to myself this is going take a wee while, but with what I had done, I could see the wave start to come to life, so I stuck with it. I can not remember exactly how long it took me, because I would do an hour here and an hour there in the evening after work, but all in all I think it took about 14 hrs.
For the past two years I have been focussing on my painting, and just last month I decided to use my old wave as my subject to paint. This time I used oils on canvas and painted it just using a palette knife, again I wanted to try and capture the movement with bold paint strokes. The difference was that this time the painting is 24x30 inches while my coloured pencil drawing was 11x16 inches, so I could be bold with the paint and it took half the time to do.

Personally I loved creating both the waves and I got very absorbed in bringing them to life with each mark of the pencil or paint of the knife, and if people looking at them, can feel the power of the sea, then I am very happy to have achieved my goal.

I hope my wee article was of interest to you fellow artists, it was just to show how I approached the same subject in different styles.

Happy drawing everyone
