Aritst of the Month

September/October 2004

My first encounter with the magic of colored pencil was at a juried exhibition in Issaquah, Washington in the fall of 1995. Since I had entered and been accepted into this show, I planned to spend an unlimited amount of time viewing and studying every piece of art. It was a multi-media exhibition, providing a treasure chest of techniques, materials, and styles. To this point, my talent, training, and interests had been focused upon oils, charcoal, conté, and watercolor. And then I saw the “Best in Show,” an incredible colored pencil painting by Barbara Newton. My new journey began.

I enrolled in as many workshops as possible in order to learn everything that I could about the materials and the techniques. As a comfort level emerged, I found that one of the greatest aspects of this exciting medium, was that of the artists who created these wondrous works. They were so warm, supportive, caring, and eager to share their experience. I joined the Colored Pencil Society of America - Chapter 207 in Seattle, and National which enabled me to develop very special friendships, and to take giant steps in my career. As my work evolved, I found that my priority for subject matter still centered upon animals and nature. Today, I continue looking at chows and cows, horses and hens, roses and rhodies, and cattails and calla lilies with very special eyes…trying to visualize how to capture the moment, and retell the story.

Technique? Most all of my pieces are painted on 4 ply Strathmore Museum Board. I prefer this ground as I sometimes will layer up to 15 pigments with intermittent burnishing, solvents, and texturing using a blade, wire, sandpaper, and other “found objects.”

The brightest advantage?” The control! The portability! The special effects!

The darkest complexity? The length of time for completion!

Colored pencil will always be among the highest on my passion list, as will watercolor which I have been unable to give up. (This is probably due to the fact that I finally learned how to do it right!)

Thank you for the opportunity to be featured as “Artist of the Month.” I am very appreciative.
