Aritst of the Month

November/December 2004

My dream as a teenager was to study art in college and become an artist. I married, had my children, and divorced by age twenty-four instead. Funny how your best plans can get turned upside down. I spent the next twenty years in a corporate job which paid the bills very well, but didn’t do much for my creative spirit.

I took early retirement in 1992 and began a quest for something more fulfilling. I had a woodcrafts business for eight years, managed a quilt shop for three years; all the while taking art classes. I studied all media and even played with colored pencils but never quite found my niche. Several years ago I was in the middle of a year long drawing class and I stumbled upon Ann Kullberg’s Colored Pencil Portraits book. I took two of Ann’s workshops last year and was hooked on cp’s.

I love the work of artist Maggie Toole. Last summer I created my first piece using my version of her circulism technique. It was the most fun I have ever experienced creating a drawing. It’s almost like meditation for me, not to mention it speeds up getting the layers of pencil on the paper. My first works using circulism were on black paper, but lately I have been starting with an acrylic underpainting on hot press watercolor paper. The colors seem much brighter than on the black paper.

A great support has been the wonderful group of artists in the Wet Canvas colored pencil forum. I joined a WC project which was to create a painting a week for one year. Even though I’m a couple of months behind by now, that commitment has kept me motivated and helped me create pieces to enter competitions for the first time this year. I am thrilled to say I have won a few awards, and have sold several colored pencil pieces.

I teach drawing and colored pencil classes at a studio near my home in Littleton, CO. I have students as young as seven and as young-at-heart as ninety-two. All my students are an inspiration to me. I continue to study drawing at the Denver Art Students League. You can never have too much drawing practice! My husband, children (all grown now), and grandchildren are my biggest fans and supporters. Even though my opportunity to create art came later in life, I wouldn’t change a thing!

In August I was fortunate to be able to attend the Colored Pencil Society of America International Exhibit in Memphis, TN. I met some wonderful people including Gemma, our Scribble webmaster. Thank you, Gemma, for the opportunity to share my art.
